LG Chem and Volkswagen target ABS and engineering plastics

LG Chem and Volkswagen Group have agreed to cooperate on ABS, engineering plastics and composite materials for future vehicle applications, including work aimed at reducing vehicle weight and improving performance.

The companies will conduct material feasibility studies and other joint research under a memorandum of understanding disclosed in LG Chem’s 28 September announcement. The programme also covers information sharing on material technologies and global mobility trends.

A second part of the cooperation will examine wider use of post-consumer recycled materials in Volkswagen Group vehicles. LG Chem said it will explore PCR and cost-efficient material solutions for interior and exterior components across Volkswagen’s automotive brands.

LG Chem currently has 2.35 million tonnes/year of global ABS production capacity and supplies grades including high-heat, high-gloss and paintless ABS. The producer identified side mirrors and radiator grilles among applications for its customer-specific materials.

The agreement is a development and application partnership rather than a disclosed resin supply contract. LG Chem did not announce purchasing volumes, a nominated vehicle programme or additional production capacity in connection with the memorandum.
