SAN PRICES SET TO CLIMB SHARPLY IN FEBRUARY 2024

SAN prices set to climb sharply. The Styrene Acrylonitrile (SAN) market is bracing for a price hike across Europe as February unfolds.

The cost increase is attributed to a combination of higher freight rates, extended lead times, and a notable surge in the price of styrene monomer, the main raw material for SAN, which has climbed by €190 per metric ton.

This escalation in import costs has rendered foreign supplies less competitive, pushing local prices upward. However, SAN suppliers face a challenging environment in passing these cost increases fully onto consumers.

The primary hurdle lies in the persistently low demand across most market segments, which makes significant price adjustments difficult to implement.

SAN’s market performance has been lackluster, with demand hitting record lows, making it one of the poorest-performing polymers in the region.

The downturn in demand is widespread, affecting sectors including construction, consumer goods, and even traditionally resilient markets like cosmetics. This broad-based weakness underscores the challenges facing the SAN market.
