INEOS Styrolution, Tomra, and EGN Entsorgungsgesellschaft Niederrhein are pioneering an alliance to turn polystyrene waste into packaging.
They are creating the world’s first large-scale facility in Krefeld, Germany, to convert post-consumer polystyrene waste into food-contact quality packaging.
The facility is expected to become operational by mid-2025 and process 40,000 tonnes of waste per year.
INEOS Styrolution will oversee the “super-cleaning” process, ensuring compliance with European Food Safety Authority standards.
EGN will manage the sorting and washing of the waste, and Tomra’s cutting-edge sorting technology completes the eco-triumvirate by ensuring a consistent feedstock supply from discarded food packaging.
This landmark initiative brings forth a new era of circularity in the recycling sector, promoting infinite recyclability and significantly reducing packaging taxes and licensing fees.
The project represents a major stride towards a sustainable future, contributing to a lower carbon footprint.
