PC imports become competitive in December as domestic prices continue to increase, according to GC Intelligence market analysis.
In the past few months, polycarbonate (PC) prices in Europe gained up to €400/mt. A combination of factors supported the increases, the latest the high prices of electricity.
Values have now climbed above €3,000/mt for many buyers. And January could see more increases amid ongoing market disruptions linked to the pandemic, such as logistics and good demand in some segments.
However, a weakening Asian market driven by a slowdown in demand in China has pushed prices down in the region. As prices decrease in Asia and increase in Europe, import from the region have gained competitiveness.
Despite the high logistic costs, offers for imports while still above €3,000/mt dropped to levels similar to European prices.
While the lower offers for Asian PC will probably not push down European prices, they certainly have the potential to blunt the current upward trend in domestic prices.
