January 14, 2020

LONDON (GC Intelligence) – Shell Chemicals, a global chemical supplier, plans to build a polycarbonate (PC) plant in Huizhou, China.

The company announced that it has signed a memorandum of uderstanding with CNOOC Oil & Petrochemicals Co Ltd (CNOOC) to explore its first commercial-scale PC production unit.

Shell, as an initial step, has started constructing a PC development unit at its Jurong Island chemicals plant in Singapore, according to the announcement.

The production unit will be based on Shell’s own patented diphenyl carbonate (DPC) process technology.

The company’s DPC technology will be combined with melt-phase PC technology licensed by EPC.

EPC Engineering & Technology GmbH, a German engineering company, has become a key player in the PC market in China. The company is currently behind several existing production projects in the country.

PC has a high impact resistance and transparency. It is used in eye protection glasses, bullet-proof glass, data storage, such as DVDs and CDs, dome lights, and sound walls.
