LONDON (GC Intelligence) – Trinseo, a global manufacturer of plastics, latex and rubber, announced earlier in December that it will decrease polystyrene (PS) prices.
The note on the company’s website noted that from 1 December 2019, contract and spot prices will decrease €20/mt.
The price decrease will affect both General Purpose Polystyrene (GPPS) and High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) grades.
A weaker market and lower prices during this time of the year is to be expected as some sectors slow down for the winter and participants try to manage low stocks.
However, there is some additional weakness on fundamentals from lackluster economic conditions and a more balanced market in 2020. As such buyers are in no hurry to fill stocks.
Some of PS applications include packaging, containers, trays, yogurt containers, CD and DVD cases, and disposable cutlery.
The major producers of polystyrene in Europe are INEOS Styrolution, Trinseo and Total.
